A note from Mr. Foster:
For Thursday: Please collect as many silver maple seeds as you can (not seeds that have been eaten). Also, please bring a paper plate or tray to bring your trees home.

History
Thursday -  we have an in class assessment.
You may have your notes - but not the textbook.
You need to have an understanding of town life, rural life and life for the indigenous people in Canada in the early 1800's.

Math
Party Planning Project Summative Task
Name:________________________
Description:  Over the last several weeks, we have been exploring data.  We have looked at the collection,
representation, interpretation, and evaluation of data.  It is now time to put all of the skills we have practiced
to good use. You are tasked with coming up with a plan for a class end of year celebration.  You are responsible
for coming up with the survey questions, collecting the data, representing the data (making the graphs),
interpreting the data (describing what the data tells you), and evaluating the data (determining if it is valid and
if we can do what it is telling us).
Your plan must include the following:
Your survey questions – be prepared to discuss if they are biased or unbiased and why you asked the
questions you did.  Include the population you asked as well.

Your graphs – you are required to produce at least 3 graphs.  Be prepared to justify why you chose
the type(s) of graphs you did to display your data and why you feel they were the best choice to represent
your data.

Interpretations of what the data told you – be prepared to discuss how you interpreted the data in your
graphs.

Evaluation of your data and your final recommendation for our class celebration.  Note that your
recommendation must be based on the data you collected.
You will present your plan by sitting down with the Party Planners (our class) for a short interview.

The rubric that will be used to assess your work is below:

Criteria
Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4
Collection (questions etc…)
- Sample vs. census
- clear? biased?

Representation (Graphs)
- accuracy
- data choices

Interpretation and evaluation of graphs
- meaningful interpretation

Interview
- able to defend your data and interpretation to class?

Letter to your nature buddy
Here are the things I will be looking for:
- tell them at least one good quality that they possess
- talk about how they have grown (not just physically)
- give them a piece of advice
SPG counts!

We had a great adventure today with our nature buddies!

Started with a huge mushroom!

Who lives here?

and here?

 and here?

Evidence of a Beaver!

 A beautiful family...

Fun Fair!
The Stuart Scott Fun Fair is on Friday June 8th. The organizing committee could use your support in a couple of ways. There will be a bake sale and donations of nut free baking are most welcome!  There will also be a basket raffle. Our class' basket theme is gardening. If you could help us fill our class basket it would be most appreciated! Items such as seeds, shovels, gardening gloves and gardening books can be brought to school anytime before June 1st. Many thanks, in advance, for your support!

History
Today we worked on a t-chart comparing the positive and negative aspects of town life in the early 1800's. (text pages 138-145)

Math
We are talking about using data to tell the story we want to tell. How can you manipulate data to tell a specific story or prove a specific point? Using the homework data that you were given, create a graph that shows a specific point of view and explain what story it tells (what point it makes). This will be collected tomorrow.

Literacy
- Wanted poster due Friday
- Truth and Reconciliation Commission call to action mini-oral presentation tomorrow

Art
We did collaborative art today with recycled paper.
Did you make things harder or easier for your group?
Here are some of the results.
Some wonderful creativity happening!

Friday, 18 May 2018

Yesterday we cleaned the room beautifully.
I also returned some work including the genius hour rubric and letter rubric. I hope you shared these with your families.

Math
Today we learned about creating spreadsheets using formulas.
We got some time to practice using google sheets.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission
Today we talked about the calls to action.
Here is the oral assignment we talked about (due Wednesday)
1. Choose one call to action
2. Rephrase the call to action (put it in kid language)
3. Why do you think this call to action is important?
4. Has anything been done about it?

The Tiger Rising
You wanted poster is due next Friday

Wednesday, 16 May 2018

There is a sign-up sheet in our classroom for the bake sale for the fun fair.
If you can contribute baking please have your child sign up.
All contributions will be much appreciated!

Great dress rehearsal today!
Looking forward to seeing everyone out for Arts Night tonight.
Please be here at 6:15. Show starts at 6:30.

Tuesday, 15 May 2018

We started the day by saving the world from a ZOMBIE BREAKOUT!
Not bad for a regular Tuesday in grade seven.
Well done everyone!

In math today we grappled with the following problem:
How can you add all of the whole numbers between 1 and 100?
Explain to your family how you worked it through.
Great thinking everyone!!!

Reminder: tomorrow is our in class history assessment.

Monday, 14 May 2018

Literacy
Today we started talking about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
What exactly is truth?
Why is the truth only coming out now (or recently)?
What is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission?

The Tiger Rising
What is the role of the tiger? What is the tiger teaching us?
You will need to create a Wanted poster that shows your understanding of a character in the book.
This is due after we complete the book.
Describe:
- physical appearance
- behaviours commonly exhibited
- triggers to that behaviour

History (Canada 1713 - 1775)
We started and in-class assessment today. It will be finished during class on Wednesday and handed in at the end of class on Wednesday. Here are your three options:
1. Choose three pivotal events and explain how they changed Canadian history.
2. Choose three pivotal people - write a journal entry for each person that explains why they are important to Canadian history.
3. Create a timeline of events using pictures, dates and words.

Math tests were returned today.

Friday, 11 May 2018

Many, many thanks to Mr. Foster for his work while I was away!

Math
Now that we have populated the table with your nature walk data, please graph this information using a graph style of your choice. Under your graph please tell the story of this data. All data tells a story - what is the story here?

History
There is not a quiz Monday! I'm sorry if I did not communicate this well. On Monday I will outline your choices for an in class assessment and this assessment will take place on Wednesday. What you CAN be doing is reviewing your notes etc... about Canada from 1713-1775. Make sure you have an understanding of the events that happened that shaped what Canada is today and consider all perspectives (Indigenous, French, British etc...)

Have a great weekend!!!

Tuesday, 8 May 2018

As we discussed, we have our immunizations tomorrow. I have asked for us all to not make a bigger deal about this than it needs to be. Be brave - you can do it.

The play is coming together! Today we talked about costuming. If you committed to bringing anything in - please do so as soon as possible.

A great morning in the wetlands. We tried out visual maps and sound maps at our sit spots. We also started taking notice of the things we planted last fall - buds are out! Great news!

Friday, 4 May 2018

The masks are complete! (or almost - for some)
I am very excited with what we have created.
I sure hope as many family members as possible are available to come to arts night.
We will have lots of visual art on display and of course - our play will be performed.
May 16th - 6:30

Good News and Bad News
The good news is... we are getting brand new lockers!
They are coming tomorrow after school.
SOOOO.... the bad news is - we have to have lockers completely cleaned out by the end of school tomorrow. PLEASE bring in bags to put all of your stuff in. This is a great opportunity to take home all of your winter gear. I don't want to jinx it, but I think its safe to put it away for the summer.

The masks are almost ready! We will paint on Friday.
Great job! I'm looking forward to the finished products!

Tuesday, 1 May 2018

Mask making continued today!

Math
Please make sure you understand and can use the terminology we discussed today.
Here is a reminder - as requested.
